It is identified as the Vegas of East that provides superb luxury, shopping and entertainment. Most of the places are not limited to one thing whereas they are a complete spectrum of everything from dining to entertainment and business. The other main attraction is the unique festivals, events and culture of Macau. They are visited by huge crowds from all over the world.

Is the city safe?  What areas are not safe?

The crime ratio of the city is very low. However, the general rules are applied which are common for every destination like taking care of belongings, passport and money in crowded places.

  • Summer season in Macau is the treat for the beach lovers. It is from May to September whereas it remains filled with thunderstorms, extreme rains and visitors.
  • March, April, October to December are the most comfortable months of the year. It is autumn and the climate is mildly cool.

Is the US Dollar widely accepted?

Hong Kong dollar (HKD) and Macau Pataca (MOP) are the currencies used in the Macau. The USD is not accepted directly anywhere in Macau but you can use HKD anywhere in the city. However, some places only accept HKD especially the luxury hotels and casinos. Money exchange places are commonly available.

What are the best areas or districts to stay in the city?

Macau Center

Macau Center is the best option for the people who want to explore history and enjoy shopping. It is located in the heart of the city with the beautiful harbor areas and downtown. There are some amazing casinos, shopping areas and dinning places.

Taipa

Macau international airport is located in Taipa. It was a rural area that is developed with time and increasing tourism. If you stay in this area, you will be able to explore the Taipa museum, old colonial houses and Coloane History. This area also has hills perfect for cycling, running and hiking.

Cotai

Cotai has some of the best hotels of the city with superb gambling places, resorts, golf courses, sports facilities and entertainment. This is a modern area with no historical places but a lot of entertainment.

Coloane

Coloane is best for relaxation, hiking and swimming among clear waters and clean sands. Swimming lovers enjoy staying in this area. You can enjoy stroll in the streets of Coloane Village among the pastel colored houses and small shops.

Macau is a wonderful place with a variety of attractions located near each other so it is easier and quicker to be explored on foot. There are different types of transportation available in Macau. Busses are used by most of the locals and visitors. The routes are associated with different destinations and the fare is written on the display near fare box. Most of the taxi drivers do not speak English so passengers have to write the destination in Cantonese. They get the map for the destination. Taxi and cabs fare is not very high. Uber is not available in Macau.

Taipa Village

Taipa village is a perfect small place to enjoy serenity of a rural area. There are markets, narrow streets, ancient temples, Portuguese style buildings, delicious food and colonial villas. You can spend some amazing time in this area.

Guia hill is the home to the fort and lighthouse that overlooks the city. This historical site belongs to 18th century. It was constructed to defend the city with a barracks, ammunition cache, chapel and water cistern. There is a storage area and commander house as well. You can have a pleasant hike to reach the attraction to explore the site and see amazing views of the sea.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Flaky pastry with the filling of sweet egg custard. This is the most popular dish of Macau that is available everywhere from the luxury eateries to the street stalls. It is served warm with caramel topping to enhance the taste. Best spot to find tart is Lord Stow and Margaret.

San Ma Lo Market

There is a huge market of fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood and different types of meats. It is filled with locals and tourists equally because it is centrally located. You can enjoy some local meals cooked with fresh vegetables and meats at the food court.

Tap Seac Craft Market

This market is arranged on two separate weekends of April. There are hundreds of stalls from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. You will find excellent quality Home décor, Accessories, food, beverages, handicrafts and many more. This is the perfect place to enjoy some international cuisines.

Rua Cinco De Outubro Night market

This is the night market in the heart of the city. You will get every kind of local and international delicacies. Single portions of food are very economical priced. It opens from 6 to 10 pm every night.

Red Market

It is located in the red colored bricks building so it is easily recognizable and famous. It belongs to the 19th century. You can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and meats from the market. This market is a mark of cultural heritage and is carefully protected by the government.

With amazing coastline, Macau has many Ferry and cruise tours available which you can book from the ferry terminal and select the time of tour. You can enjoy an amazing Ferry tour of Macau from Shenzhen. It departs from the Macau ferry terminal and provides the amazing sightseeing tour of all the attractions and nearby places. Are Casinos allowed?  Blackjack tables?  If so, what’s the best Casino in town?

Macau is famous for its glamorous and huge casinos. There are a lot of them but the best one is the Venetian. It is the second biggest casinos of the world with a huge variety of games like baccarat, blackjack, roulette and many more. Venetian is one of the biggest buildings of Asia with luxury hotel, event spaces, restaurant, shopping and entertainment.

Any last advice for people visiting the city?

  • You can buy ferry tickets in advance but if you forget then it is not a big problem Ferries depart every hour from Hong Kong and Macau.
  • Ferries are usually overcrowded during festivals so buy the tickets in advance during the peak tourist season. It will make you wait for hours if you do not have advance booking.
  • If you have a ticket, then you can board a ferry earlier. However, you have to ask the operator about the availability of the seat.
  • Different hotels and casinos have free shuttle service that you have to check so you do not need to worry about the transportation for a hotel and casino. Only small hotels do not have the shuttle service. If you board a hotel shuttle, then they do not care asking. They only focus on providing convenience to their casino guests.
  • If your hotel does not have the shuttle service, then you can board a nearby hotel that offers shuttle.
