Cartagena Tour Guide Interview

Here’s our latest interview with a tour guide or certified local as we seek to learn from some of the top experts from the places we love.

My questions are in bold and the responses follow below.  Please excuse us if you see a mistake in grammar, we are travel bloggers and expert foreigners not English writers.  😉


What’s your name and how old are you?

Answer:  My name is jose villa and i am 33 years old.

Do you have kids? If so, how old are they?

Answer:  I have one son, Salomon. He is 14 years old.

Where are you originally from and what city do you currently live?

Answer:  I was born and raise in cartagena city and i currently live here.

How long have you been a tour guide?

Answer:  I have been a tour guide a bit more than 8 years.

Are you a licensed tour guide?  What cities? If so, from which organization?

Answer:  I am a licensed tour guide. I am able to be a guide in all colombia and the vice ministry of colombian tourism certificated me.

How many tours have you provided?

Answer:  I think i have done around 700 tours in my life.

Let’s get to the exciting stuff.  Why should anyone visit the city?

Answer:  Visiting cartagena means few things: this is a place that mix history, beach, architecture, good food and fun. the city is very save and people very friendly. is the right place to get in touch with the Latino Mood. We have great hotels, good english speaking people working all over the city, excellent restaurants and the city itself is a museum.  In cartagena we say that WE LIVE WHERE THE ANGELS GO FOR VACATIONS.

Is the city safe?  What areas are not safe?

Answer:  Very safe.

What’s the weather like?

Answer:  90 to 100 fahrenheit is the average temperature.

What languages are spoken in the area?  Is English spoken?

Answer:  The official language is spanish but many people speak english all over the city.

Is US Dollar widely accepted?

Answer:  No, Colombian Pesos.

What are the best areas or districts to stay in the city?

Answer:  Old town and Bocagrande (10 minutes from old town)

What’re your top 3 hotels and why?

Answer:  Best hotels are sofitel, san agustin and anandá.

How does one get around the city?  Taxi, Uber, similar apps, ATVs?

Answer:  Normally walking is the best way to explore the old city, also you can use taxi and horse carriages at night time.

Can you highlight the MUST see sight?  Minimum of 5, feel free to share as many as you would like.

Answer:  The best places to visit in cartagena are: the old town, getsemani neighborhood, san felipe fort, la popa monastery, rosario islands.  The must should be a bike tour, a walking tour and party bus around the city.

What’s the best place to take a photo?

Answer:  The best place to take photos are plaza de los coches, cafe del mar, the bay, teatro heredia and the walls.

What about the top 3 restaurants?

Answer:  Don juan, carmen and monte sacro

What‘s the one thing you MUST eat in the city?

Answer:  Arepas & Empanadas.

Any rooftop bars or restaurants that you recommend?

Answer:  Charleston hotel, movich, and mirador.

Can you recommend the best shopping areas?  Best shopping mall?

Answer:  Las bovedas, caribe plaza mall, bocagrande shoping center.

Do you recommend any tours outside the city?  Islands? Boat Tours?

Answer:  A boat day trip is very recommended to visit the rosary islands.

Where should one go at night?  Any bar/nightlife areas or districts you recommend?

Answer:  Babar, la movida, alquimico, tu candela, donde fidel.

Are Casinos allowed?  Blackjack tables?

Answer:  Few casinos are located in bocagrande area.

Any last advice for people visiting the city?

Answer:  Like I said, in cartagena we say that: WE LIVE WHERE THE ANGELS GO FOR VACATIONS.
